Scope 3 programs often start with a difficult tradeoff. Build broad emissions coverage quickly using the data already available, or wait for supplier-specific information that can take months to collect and validate. This trade-off can hold an initial program, but mature ones require both.

Enterprises need enough coverage to understand their footprint and find the suppliers that matter. Then it needs a practical way to improve accuracy where stronger data could change an emissions calculation, influence a procurement decision, support assurance, or reshape a reduction plan. That is the model behind SINAI Engage.

As the supplier carbon intelligence and action layer within SINAI's carbon management platform, Engage connects broad supplier coverage with a progressive path toward better data. Teams can establish a baseline, assess where uncertainty or data quality matters most, engage selected suppliers, approve stronger inputs, and use those inputs throughout the same carbon data model.

Supplier Surveys add a new primary-data layer to that workflow. It gives teams a structured way to request information directly from suppliers when primary data is worth the effort, and to incorporate approved responses into calculations and downstream actions.

The result is a Scope 3 engagement program that can expand coverage without waiting for every supplier to respond, while steadily increasing supplier-specific accuracy where it carries the most value.

The supplier data loop: from coverage to action

Supplier engagement becomes difficult to scale when every step is handled separately. Procurement data lives in one system. Emissions estimates sit in another. Supplier requests move through inboxes and spreadsheets. Reporting happens later, often after another round of reconciliation.  SINAI Engage is designed around a connected supplier data loop instead.

Build supplier coverage

The first objective is visibility. SINAI Engage uses existing supplier and procurement information to establish broad supplier-level Scope 3 coverage. AI Emissions Match maps supplier and activity data to the best available emission factors, with review controls and traceability, so teams can begin identifying emissions hotspots before waiting for primary data from an entire supplier base.

That approach is built for enterprise scale. SINAI currently maps more than 4 million companies and supports all 15 Scope 3 categories, while combining supplier-specific and public emissions factors with supplier analytics.

Prioritize material suppliers and data gaps

Once the baseline exists, the next question is where better data will matter. SINAI Engage brings supplier emissions together with spend, emissions intensity, and data-quality signals. That makes it possible to distinguish between a gap that is immaterial to the inventory and one that could meaningfully change a result.

A supplier responsible for a major emissions hotspot may justify direct engagement. A low-impact supplier based on a reasonable secondary emission factor may not.

That distinction matters at scale. Asking thousands of suppliers for primary data simply because they exist in the value chain creates work for sustainability teams and suppliers without guaranteeing a more decision-useful inventory. Progressive accuracy directs effort where it can have the greatest impact.

Collect and validate supplier data

Supplier Surveys add structured questionnaires for cases that require specific data fields, documentation, or a repeatable review process.

Teams can manage the entire data collection process directly within the platform:

  • Build configurable questionnaires for emissions and other supplier metrics
  • Distribute questionnaires to selected suppliers
  • Monitor submission and response status in real time
  • Send targeted follow-ups and reminders
  • Review and validate incoming information before approval

SINAI's Engage integrates these workflows directly into the environment where suppliers manage emissions, eliminating the need for disconnected survey tools and manual inventory reconciliation.

Put approved data to work

Approval should not be the end of supplier engagement. Once you accept supplier information, it can feed directly into emissions calculations with traceability back to its source. From there, the same supplier-level data serves several teams at once. Procurement can use emissions insights to focus conversations on high-impact relationships and support supplier evaluation, while sustainability teams carry that information into reporting and target tracking.

Because Engage operates within SINAI’s broader platform, supplier information also connects with SINAI Report for disclosure workflows and SINAI Reduce for decarbonization planning. This creates continuity between the data used to understand the footprint and the data used to decide what to do about it.

That downstream connection is central to the Engage model, which is built around supplier-level visibility, procurement action, and a direct link to Scope 3 decarbonization. Supplier data becomes part of the carbon management process rather than remaining in a survey portal.

CBAM raises the stakes for supplier-specific emissions data

Regulation adds urgency to this shift, especially when emissions data can trigger a financial obligation.

The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism entered its definitive regime in 2026. For covered imports, authorized CBAM declarants can determine embedded emissions using Commission default values or actual emissions data. When operators use actual emissions, they must calculate them according to the CBAM methodology, and an accredited verifier must independently verify the data. Verification applies at the installation where the CBAM goods are produced. That makes upstream data processes important well before a verification report is issued.

Companies need a structured process to manage compliance:

  • Identify relevant suppliers
  • Request the required information
  • Maintain supporting evidence
  • Review and validate submissions
  • Prepare reliable emissions data for verification

SINAI covers monitoring, calculation, evidence, and the workflow layer, while an accredited CBAM verifier remains responsible for the final independent audit.

Default values remain an available route under the definitive regime, and the Commission publishes sector-specific values under the applicable implementing rules. For companies considering actual values, the decision therefore depends on their goods, suppliers, available evidence and the applicable CBAM methodology, rather than on a universal markup applied to every default value.

The first annual CBAM declaration, covering 2026 imports, is due by September 30, 2027. That gives companies that handle covered goods a concrete reason to improve supplier monitoring and evidence-gathering processes now.

ESRS creates another reason to understand where Scope 3 data comes from. For undertakings reporting under ESRS E1, the standard requires disclosure of the extent to which Scope 3 emissions use inputs from specific value chain activities, including the percentage calculated using primary data obtained from suppliers or other value chain partners.

These requirements differ, but they point to the same operational capability: knowing where supplier data comes from, how strong it is, and where more precise information is worth collecting.

Build a supplier data strategy around materiality.

Supplier engagement does not become scalable by sending more requests. It scales when teams know who to engage, why they need better information, and what happens to that information once it arrives.

SINAI Engage brings those decisions into one connected process. Build broad coverage first. Use supplier analytics and data-quality signals to find the gaps that matter. Collect primary data where it can improve confidence or change an action. Then carry approved information directly into calculations, procurement workflows, reporting, and reduction planning. Supplier Surveys strengthens that system by making targeted primary-data collection structured and repeatable.

For sustainability teams, that means less effort spent reconciling disconnected processes. For procurement, it generates supplier-level emissions data to inform engagement and sourcing. And for the business, it creates a clearer path from Scope 3 data to decisions that reduce exposure and emissions over time.
